TEACHER'S SALARY PACKAGES (United Kingdom)

Salaries vary widely in teaching according to where you teach, the type of post you hold and the school you work in. In addition, teachers' salaries are reviewed and raised on a yearly basis. Changes to teachers' salaries reflect a number of factors, including the difficulty of recruiting and retaining staff, how highly teachers are valued by the society in which they work, union negotiations and so on. The following comments are designed to give a generalized overview of how teachers pay works:.

  • There are different pay 'spines' or scales, e.g. for leadership, ASTs, qualified and unqualified teachers. In Scotland there are different scales for main grade, chartered and principal teachers.
  • Head teachers are paid according to the size and type of school in which they work.
  • Teachers are paid their salary according to the number of 'points' they have on a particular spin.
  • Classroom teachers move up one point on the spine for each year's experience, until they reach the top of the main pay scale (M6)..
  • At this stage, they may (or may not)move onto the next spine, for instance passing the 'threshold'.
  • Additional allowances or points are given for:

---Management responsibilities, e.g. heads of department

---Number of year's experience (not just teaching, also skills')

---Recruitment and retention

---SEN responsibilities

---Teachers in particular areas of the country, e.g. in and around London

SALARY SCALES

Teaching pays reasonably well in comparison with ther graduate professions. Teachers enter the profession on a respectable starting salary, there is a good rate of progression and many other benefits are available, such as a generous pension scheme. There are some variations in salaries between England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

PAY SCALES IN ENGLAND AND WALES

Qualified Teachers

Classroom teachers start on the main pay scale. There are separate pay scales for England and Wales, inner London, outer London and the fringe. Qualified teachers who reach the top of the main pay scale may apply to pass the threshold. Teachers on the main pay scale move to the next point on the scale every September, subject to satisfactory performance. Teachers whose performance has been judged to be excellent can advance by two points. Other payments may be available to teachers who take on additional roles and responsibilities, such as SEN or management duties. Advanced skills teachers are paid on a separate, 27-point pay scale.

Unqualified Teachers

Unqualified teachers are paid on a 10-point scale, with the governing body deciding exactly where on the scale they should start. Some teachers receive an additional allowance on top of this basic salary. Trainee teachers who follow an employment-based route to QTS are usually paid on the unqualified teachers' pay scale.

PAY SCALES IN SCOTLAND

In Scotland there are different scales for main grade, chartered and principal teachers. All teachers are placed on point 0 for their first (probationary) year in teaching. If you are successful in becoming a fully registered teacher, you should go up the pay scale by one increment each year. Teachers with relevant career experience can potentially jump up to four points after the probation year, subject to the employer's discretion. There are additional financial incentives available for teachers who work in remote areas of Scotland, in the form of an allowance on top of the normal salary. These are a 'distant island allowance' of £1,536 and a 'remote schools allowance' of £957 or £1,791.

PAY SCALES IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Pay scales in Northern Ireland are the same as those in England and Wales, with classroom teachers starting on the main pay scale. The rules for passing the threshold are the same. Teachers rise up the pay scale by one point every September, pending satisfactory performance.

Teachers Salary Packages in Pakistan

Teacher's salaries are low all over the world and the same situation exists in Pakistan. Teachers working in primary schools have low salaries even as compared to police constable.
