8.1.3 Characteristics of Text Books

The characteristics of text books are their size, bindings and paper, print. and pictures. Pictures are selected on the basis of their instructional value. Illustrations in text books are not for decoration. They are used to concretize, clarify, enhance, and elaborate on the written text.

Research on the text book has focused on two general areas for its effectiveness, structure and layout. The study of text structure has focused on how the reader builds cognitive representations from text. Layout illustrations are important predictors of a text's effectiveness.
